Please Miss, I've done my homework ...

... the other weekend Scrappy and I went to a meeting of the Yorkshire Modern Quilt Group.  One member was demonstrating how to do a mock piped binding by machine which looked very effective, and easy, and would be a wonderfully quick way of finishing quilts.  Hmm, not so.  Or at least, not in my case.  I'm not even going to show you a photo of my first attempt.  So I tried again the next day, and I'm not showing you a photo of that effort either.  Anyway, a few days later we got together and had a sewing (and chatting, and eating) day and we'd decided to have another go. I was still not happy with my efforts and we think it was because we were tucking the ends of our binding in to finish it, and that was making for an awfully lumpy, bumpy bit.  So we made another decision.  The next time we get together, we are going to have another go, but this time we will try joining the tails of the binding instead.  So, I've done my homework and have a little mug rug all ready to go, together with the mock-piped binding and I'm actually ready early cos we're not meeting up till next week.  Here's the one that's ready to go
I know I said I'm not showing you my 3rd (or was it 4th) go from last week, but here it is, just for a laugh
By the way, why is it that when you look at something, it's fine, until you look at a photo of it?  Can you spot the deliberate mistake?

  1. I don't know why it is that I can usually spot my mistakes so much better in a photo then if I just plain look at it on the wall or floor

  2. Yep, a photo will always tell the truth. And I don't usually take photos until quilted and bound, so it can be a very unhappy realization. I had to look for a minute to see your mistake - it didn't jump out at me if that makes you feel any better.

  4. I spotted the deliberate mistake. I like the look of the piping, although I've seen it on quilts that weren't modern. It has a nice tactile effect.

  5. I love your enthusiasm....both mug rugs are so sweet...really love those hexies. I know what you mean about seeing a mistake in a picture...happens way too often in my sewing corner for my liking!

  8. I think it looks great. I have decided that there are some techniques that I just don't enjoy. You may find that this is one of those techniques for you.

  10. It took a while for me to spot the error, but I think I know what it is. I've never attempted the piping either and now I don't think I ever will. Is it really that hard? Take care and have fun next time you try.

  11. Faux piped binding adds so much to a finished quilt and it is really quite easy to do - I put it on just like I would normal binding and I've never had any issues. The only thing different is that you first sew to the back of the quilt and turn it to the front -I love the way it makes it easy to sew by machine to finish the quilt! Looking good :)

  13. Faux piping binding huh? I have challenges binding period let alone add another whole new angle to it. In my case it would be Faux pas faux piping binding.
