Can anybody help ...

... my father has been sitting thinking about meals he used to have when he was young. This time he has a craving for matzo balls.  I can remember having them too, with chicken soup of course, every time we went to see my grandmother and I also loved them.  The problem is that Dad wants some and I don't have a recipe.  I've found several online and tried them, but, although some have been close, none of them are quite right.  Dad's family are from Russia and Poland, so I'm wondering if there are any special recipes from that part of Europe? Is any one able to help? Please?

By the way, why are they spelled Matzo and pronounce Motza, or is that just my family?

  1. Can't help you on this one Sue, as I've never even heard of them. Hope someone can find the right recipe for you, though I think our taste buds change as we age and some things just don't taste as we remembered them. Take care.

  2. I love love love Matzo Ball Soup. Here is the recipe I use:
    3 eggs, beaten until light
    2 T. vegetable oil
    1/2 c. water
    Mix then add:
    1c. Matzo meal
    1/2 t. baking powder
    salt & pepper
Put this mixture in the fridge for 20 min.

In large pot, heat 2 quarts (or more) of good quality chicken broth
    add
    2 or so chopped carrots
    2 or so chopped celery

    Bring to a boil.
With wet hands, gently shape matzo mixture into balls (about the size of golf balls or slightly larger). You want them to hold together but still be light after cooking. Drop into boiling soup & turn down to a simmer. Cover & cook on low for 30 min. until matzo cooked through.

    good luck!

  3. I have never taste Matzo balls so I am no help. We have a Jewish deli that serves them and my BIL ordered them when we ate there one time. He says they are very good. Good luck on finding a recipe.

  4. I am only polish by marriage. I just learned how to make Pierogi with sweet cheese, and Sweet Kraut and Kielbasa. You will have to share when you find the perfect recipe.
