I have a question ....

... and I would really like to hear your opinions.  If you are buying a pattern, do you like to see a pretty, "posed" photo of the quilt on the front like this

or would you prefer to see a flat shot such as this

Finally, just because I can, here's a photo of a lovely azalea in our garden.  In real life it is actually a much deeper pink, but I am a useless photographer, and this was the best I could do.

  1. I prefer a flat shot so I can get a true sense of the quilt design.

  2. Even though I love the garden shot!! I think I prefer the flat shot so I can see clearly what I'm making.

  3. The garden shot is very pretty but I also prefer to the flat shot so that I can see the entire quilt. Maybe put the flat shot on the front of the pattern and the garden shot on the back of the pattern ?

  4. The posed shot grabs my attention and is more pleasing to look at. I do like a flat shot in the instructions though, helps with fabric selections and visualizing how the quilt goes together.

  5. Why not a flat shot for the cover and the staged shot smaller picture on back of pattern with details of fabrics needed?

  6. I definitely want to see the whole quilt when I buying a pattern, so I know what I am getting myself into!

  7. I'm with the flat shot on the cover and a smaller posed shot on the back idea.

  8. I like to see the whole quilt, the others are pretty but frustrating.

  9. Actually Sue, I like to see both with the posed one first, then the whole quilt along with the actual pattern. Pretty painful, aren't I. Take care.

  10. I like to see just the quilt no background.

  12. On the front a nice flat shot, but the back can have a more artistic picture.

  13. I prefer the flat shot to see all the dataitls on what I'm making.

  14. I like the flat shots, so I can really see the quilt.

  15. The posed picture is what gets my attention. However, the flat picture is usually what I base my decision to purchase on. I think the front of the pattern has room for a fairly large posed picture and one or two smaller flat pictures underneath. Of course, I will admit I am not above opening a pattern to browse the instructions.

  16. On the front I love a flat shot with no background to distract from it, then on the back with the fabric requirements a small posed shot :)

  17. I agree with the others. I love looking at the posed pictures, but when it's decision time, I want to see the flat shot to get a better idea of how involved the design is.

  18. I like the flatter shots too as they give me a better idea of the quilt... but there is no rule that says you can't set that pretty azalea in the flat shot. ;-)

  19. I prefer the flat shot so I can better see the design. Maybe you could have a flat shot AND also a photo of the quilt draped over a chair or whatever on the side.

  21. I prefer the flat shot, as it gives me a better over all view of the quilt.

  22. they both work well but for selling purpose the flat one, maybe the other one could go on the back of the pattern. I am off to the quilt show in malvern today

  23. I'd go for the flat shot too, the other photo is lovely but could be another view of the quilt.

  24. I also prefer the "flat" shot so I can see exactly what I'm looking for in my quilt.

  25. Magazines always entice readers with a pretty posed picture, which is nice...but I always go digging to find the bones...I want/need to see the whole quilt in an edge to edge photo to get the real story. Partial, folded, posed pictures leave me frustrated...I want the full meal deal at the beginning.
PS-I'm also not good with "just wait and be surprised", but that's a whole other story!

  27. Pretty azaleas. Love all the color we're seeing now. I like the flat picture, even though the posed draped one is attractive. I like to see the details.

  28. Like lots of other people if I'm buying a pattern I like to see a flat shot of the quilt to see it in its entirety as it were. If the author want to put other "styled" photos on too that's nice but not necessary.

  29. I like to see a pretty posed picture on the front and a full, flat picture on the back with the supply list.

  30. I like both. If I have to pick one, I'll take the flat. If you can't see the full design of the quilt, you might be very disappointed when you get it1

  31. I don't know how I missed this post-I think it would be lovely to see the posed quilt on the front and a full shot on the back(knowing it would be somewhat smaller).

  32. Flat shot so I can see what the quilt looks like!

  33. I prefer the flat shot, Sue, but you could always put the "staged" version on the back or make an inset on the front - sort of in a small circle to show it. Your azalea is stunning! I think our similar climates are perfect for azaleas - especially this year!
    Cheers!
