Read any good books lately?

I was lucky enough to get an iPod for Christmas, which I wanted so I could have music and books on it to listen to while I am sewing.

Now, I can't decide what books to get.  Anyone got any good ideas?  I like autobiographies, Jane Austin, mysteries, (but not really scary gruesome ones cos I'm a wimp really and they'll give me nightmares!)  I don't like Catherine Cookson cos she's too depressing, and I'm not keen on the Bronte's for the same reason.

There's a new blogger on the block:  Yuki has been reading my blog for a while and has finally decided to start one herself.  If you have a few minutes to spare, why not pop over there and say hi?  Her stash, which she shows in her first post is amazing.  I am so jealous.

  2. I can't recommend any specific books to you because everyone's taste is so different but would I would strongly recommend is that you search out recordings which are complete and unabridged.

Over the years I have tried to listen to many books on tape which were cut-down versions of the 'real thing' and always found them a sad and unacceptable substitute for the original book.

  3. Hi I love listening to books on my ipod!
Have you read the historical fiction, The Other Bolyn Girl, or the Constant Princess, the author has several Royal Family titles. I also love all the books by Geraldine Brooks, A year of Wonders and People of the Book.

  6. Hi Sue, what a great gift. Have you heard of http://www.shelfari.com/ ?
you can set up your own shelf, I don't "talk to anyone" on it but you can if you want. I use it to keep track of the books I've read and what I want to read. If you put in an author you like, you can see all their work and use it as a jumping off point.

  7. Hi Sue, I read FAR too much, hence the slow progress on everything else! We're big Michael Connelly fans, particularly the ones where Harry Bosch is the main character (police detective). I like Janet Evanovich for a good laugh, though her books are very formulaic, so you'll probably only want to read one or two, Wilbur Smith is always good ... hmmm I could be here all evening if I start! I very seldom read a book I don't like! Oh, I've also read quite a few Nora Roberts / JD Robb books recently. Better stop there ...

  8. I too am a readerholic (it's my addictive personality and ability to spend long periods of time sitting on my couch under a quilt....)
I'll read almost anything but some faves are Bryce Courtney (Aussie), Paulina Simmons (Tully is WONDERFUL) and Freya North. I hope you have fun listening.

  9. A lot of the Radio 4 stuff is worth a listen, Sue, as well as talking books & music, and is generally available as a podcast - classic serials, drama, and some very good comedies (I found 'Ladies of Letters' particularly good, with Prunella Scales & Patricia Routledge - MUCH better than the TV version!).

Our library has a talking books section, but not sure about how possible (or legal!) it would be to borrow them and put them on your gadget?

  10. I listen to books on my iPhone all the time. Audible.com and I are great friends. As for book recommendations, that's tough. I enjoyed books by Arianna Franklin. They're historical mysteries. I've also just listened to the previews on their site and picked books that way.

  12. Wow, You're a Jane Austin fan! Have you seen Lost in Austin? I caught on BBC America. It was 4 episodes. A woman from our time swaps places with Elizabeth Bennet and meets Mr Darcy! It was soooo good. Last night I was browsing the local book store and bought Pemberly Manner, Dary & Elizabeth for better or for worse. I can't wait to get started.

Janet Evanovich is also one of my favs. The characters are hilarious!

    Thanks for the link.

    ttfn :) Yuki
