It's not right ...

... is it?
This is the block where I used the squiggly fabric around the centre square.  When I sewed it together, I didn't think it worked after all, so then I made another block going back to Plan A, ie using the background fabric round the centre.

It's definitely better, but it's still not right.  I am thinking that the scale of the pink fabric is too large, apart from the fact that some of the squiggly squares are pointing in the wrong direction.

I think tomorrow I'll try again, and just use the smaller scale patterns.  Or maybe tomorrow I'll try again using completely different fabrics, like the ones I showed the other day.  The trouble is, I really love these fabrics!

  1. You're right (as always), the central star disappears in the first block but looks much better using the background fabric. Perhaps the 'problem' in the second is that there's not enough contrast between the pink fabric and the squiggly fabric ?

  2. The large print with the flower petals looks great in the center. Try making piece H and G different fabrics so you will get more contrast and variety. I think you will do better with smaller scale fabrics.

  3. I trust you'll get it right in the end. The second version looks very nice.

  4. Don't be so hard on yourself. I like both versions and the fact that your squigles are going different directions gives it a lot of movement. Down with quilt police!!

  5. I like those fabrics too, Sue. So many more modern style quilters are doing quilt blocks very much like what you have come up with. Larger scale prints and sort of smooshed together look. Just a different style but you have to do what pleases you.

  6. I like both of them. I agree with MaryBeth, the first one looks like it is exploding! Thanks for sharing.

  7. Try using those fabrics that aren't contrasting enough in another version with some new companions and just remember...this is a relax, have fun thing we're doing and it's supposed to be scrappy! Do what you love and use what you love and you won't ever go wrong!

  9. Your fabrics are wonderful. I love the center in the first block. Perhaps you could use bright (yellow/pink) solids to frame out the center.

  10. Pretty color scheme! I think another thing to consider is the amount of white in the fabrics that make the star points. Keep playing. Your quilts are always gorgeous, so I know this one will be too.

  11. I think you're on the right track, but I agree about the pink print being to big, it's getting a little lost in that star.
