And the moral of the story is ....

.... a couple of days ago Mrs Nomad gave me some cooking apples from one of the trees in her new garden.  So I've been pretending that I'm a domestic goddess, and baking.  I've made about 2 dozen apple and cinnamon muffins, 2 apple pies and a big apple cake.

So just what is the moral of the story?

Well, if you are baking, always make sure you wear your glasses, otherwise you could do what I did with the apple cake.  I put a tablespoon of what I thought was vanilla essence in the mixture, only to realise as I was pouring the essence into the cake mix, that I had picked up the almond essence instead.  My excuse is that the bottles are just the same, it's only the labels that are different.

  2. You'll have to send me some of that baking so I can do a taste test. I'll put the kettle on, thanks.

  5. And then there was the time I was following a recipe for coleslaw that called for a 2 tablespoons of dried, minced onion. Did you ever realize that the container for dried, minced garlic looks a lot like the one for dried, minced onion? Yep, I made it to take to a picnic. And no, I didn't taste it before I served it. Let's just say that there were no vampires at that picnic.

  8. Well at least it was a sweet additive. Visiting with friends once, she served up pie for dessert. Come to find out the daughter who had made the pie mistook the SALT container for the SUGAR container and had made the pie with a whole cup of SALT!!! What a rude awakening for the young man who took the first bite.

  9. Oh pooey, that would be a waste of nice apples in this house as no-one is particularly fond of almonds. Thinking about it, that couldn't have happened here - no almond essence!

How is Mrs N's new house coming on?

  10. Too funny but you are right...I have done that. Also wear you glasses when cleaning house....somehow I missed some cobwebs...didn't see them....that is my story.

  12. Oh my goodness....I bet it was still yummy! Perhaps I detect the makings of a new cookbook!
    Cheers!

  13. It's amazing how different things look without our glasses. I swear I look at least 15 years younger when I don't wear my glasses, and my house is so much cleaner when I don't have my glasses on. :)

  14. Sounds like the PERFECT excuse to me! Besides, just like in quilting, you took that recipe and made it your own!

  17. It happens to the best of us......

A few years ago...... on the night before thanksgiving I was making pumpkin pies at about 10:00 pm.....just as I was putting the pies in the oven I glanced at the bottle of cinnamon and realized I had put in chilli powder instead. I said a few choice words and asked hubby real nice if he would go to the store before it closed at midnight....LOL he did and it all turned out ok, but I was up late that night...and we still laugh about it.....

  19. So how did they taste? I did this once with vanilla extract using almond instead - it was so good! Now it's my new secret.

  20. Ha! I had to laugh, this is so totally something I would do...with or without glasses!

  21. Funny story. I think most of us have made a few "special" dishes. I love the smell of anything baked with almond flavoring.
