Welcome to …

Lone Star button150... the first Lone Star Quiltalong Day.  As I said in my previous post, here, this is not a conventional quiltalong, more of a mutual support group.  So, no instructions, no deadlines, no anything else really.  I hope people will join us, sign up to the Linky below, and write about their experience with this pattern.

Today I am not sewing, because I only ordered the fabrics yesterday - yes, OK, stop muttering about the lack of planning.  It's ordered now OK?  I couldn't do it before, cos I only finalised the design I plan to work on yesterday.

Here is the design I've come up with.  Actually, to be precise, here are the designs I've come up with.  They are both the same, but I can't decide whether to have a dark centre star or a light one.  One book I've read says you should always have a light one, so the light seems to radiate out from it and that you should never have a dark one cos it looks like a black hole, and the other book says exactly the opposite.  I like them both, so I thought I'd ask you for some help.  Which of the two looks better?

Later on (after I've had lunch) I'll come back and tell you about some pattern sources I've found, and I hope you'll all chip in there too.

  1. Although I'm not taking part in the Lone Star QAL, that doesn't stop me adding my two penn'th - no sirree!

Both designs look fab - but if it was me (and it's not, I know), I'd go for the design with the light centre - looks more 'balanced' overall, in my view.

    Have fun!

  2. The dark center brings in the dark tips, If I were to make the light centered one I would change out those dark tips because they look out of place with no other dark in the quilt, or add a dark ring closer to the light colored center for more of a balanced look.

  3. Both are beautiful. I personally am drawn to the lighter center. The star radiates outward like the North Star in a clear sky.

I am riding the fence on joining. All the patterns I found state advanced skill level. I'm not there. Besides I have UFOs. But I have a gift certificate-local fabric shop so could start soon. And I love Lone Star quilts. Perhaps I will decide once I check out your pattern sources. Happy quilting!

  4. Good day to you, Sue! Enjoy your planning day. I'm not able to participate...too many UFOs, but I love what you're doing and wish you all the best in your road to the lone star! I think both of your choices are beautiful...my eye tends to go back to the dark centre, but really, you will have a work of art when you are done!
    Cheers and Happy Saturday!

  7. Oh I like the black center. It really draws me in, though the other is good there is just something great about the black hole. Don't think it looks like a black hole though...

You're thinking what I'm thinking, I just got a catalog that used a variation on an American beauty block for the background behind the star and I was beginning to think about how it would look with that concept and Dresden Plate Blocks...

Glad to link up - just need to make my post now...

  8. I can see why you are having a hard time deciding on which color. You'll know which looks right when your fabric arrives.

Wish I could join you....just too many other projects going on right now. I will have fun following over your shoulders to see what everyone is creating.

  9. Ooooh it's hard to choose but I think I prefer the dark centre. As Lyn says it might be easier choosing when your fabric arrives.

  10. Somehow I missed your January 2nd post and now I'm behind in getting my act together on this one..... The black centre has more ummph to it. I can't explain it in concrete terms - it just hits me more.

  11. Hi Sue! I see that you have successfully signed in to my Mr. Linky; now I've done the same on yours. All this new stuff I'm learning!! How cool! I love it! This is fun!

  12. Wow Sue what a great project for 2012. Sorry I am not joining you, but my theme for this year is "little things", so I will have to miss out. I think the trick with this pattern is the same with all quilts...contrast. I think that the colour of your background fabric, vs tip of stars need to be the right level of contrast and that hopefully then should give you a decision about the centre dark v light. But guess its too late if you have already ordered the fabric? Good luck, I will be encouraging you from afar! Happy quilting, Sue SA.
