I have a question …

... how big should it be?

questns

How big should WHAT be?  A table topper or a runner, that's what.

I want to make either a topper or a runner as a gift for someone, and just can't decide what is a good size.  I've been looking on the internet and have found so many different answers now that I'm getting confused.

Can any one help?

  1. Do you know what size the table is or can you ask? I just made the Nautical & Nice table topper and love that it covers the entire top of the table. Just a thought!

  2. I think the beauty of a table topper is that you can make it any size you want. I would try to think of a table that is in the house, and try to make something that fits it. But since blocks come in different sizes, you just make your blocks, and if it turns out to be a little bigger or smaller than the table, it is still good.

  3. I look at the table...for a topper I like a square...for a runner it could be any length. Ask yourself do you want the runner to run off the table or stay on it? In other words...I don't know..How about when you run out of fabric consider it done!! :O)

  4. I don't think there is a wrong or right answer for this one. It depends on the look you want. I have a small coffee table I bought in England at an antique market....I scale down my runners so that I can see the wood and not over power it with a quilt runner. On my round table I have a square Schnibble that works perfectly and I can still enjoy the massive oak wood.

  5. It all depends on the size of the table. I have a smaller runner, so a 30-36 runner is fine, but my MIL table is very long, and one that short would look funny on it, she would need one at least 50 long or so. Also is here table rectangle, square or round? That helps in the decision in what size and shape you want as well. I think runners look great on rectangle tables, and toppers look great on round or square tables, and ok on the rectangle ones if you put them on point to the table.

  6. I agree with Ann Marie that it all depends on the table size and shape...and where folks sit at that table. For example, if the table is rectangular and people sit only on the long sides, I'd make the runner longer than if people sit at the ends and the sides.

Basically, you don't want the runner to get into the plate/silverware/glassware zone...

So... I'm not help at all, am I?

  7. I'm like you. There are so many decisions about one little thing that I usually do nothing because I can't decide. Didn't help any, did I?

  8. I think the answer is.. whatever size you want to make! I prefer smaller ones as then I have options on where I can put it. Have a happy day!

  9. I would use your own table as a guide. I use toppers on side tables and bureaus, so the size may be variable. Maybe the design you are using would be a better way to determine the size.

  10. I think that you make such lovely things that the person getting it will just be happy they got a lovely table runner and not care about its size!

  11. I'm going to make a runner for a friend (when I eventually get the sewing room rebuilt) and to ensure it is exactly what she needs we measured the width of her dining table, measured how much space the big dinner plates take up, subtract that (twice) and the result is how wide the runner can be to go down the middle.

Length is simpler - length of table plus a decent overhang so it drapes nicely.

  12. I go with the table size. My coffee table is actually a bench belonging to a kitchen set - perfect size for my small apartment. I make the runners to fit the surface area. No overhang as that tempts furry black paws. Right or wrong this works for me.

  13. I think anything goes. Most of the table toppers I've seen are square, but they sure vary in size.

  15. Depends on the table I'd say. Something like 12" by whatever you'd like. A nice long table might want it to be 72" long but a small table might not want a runner so long maybe only 48". I'm sure it's going to be beautiful.

  16. I don't think they are any rules. I like them longer than I typically find in patterns. I like to be able to set my table with the runner on the table though. If she has a square table a circular runner might be neat.

  17. Agree with others...no set size...depends on where it is being used. That's what I love about toppers and runners.

  18. How about 48" x 48" for a table topper. I like to make mine square, so I can turn it on the diagonal.
