.......... Remember a few weeks ago I won a jelly roll and some yardage through SewCalGal? Well, I've used it.
I came up with this design, which was very quick and easy to make. Then came the borders. Well, I had quite a lot of odd pieces of fabric left, so I had a bright idea (I was going to do "arty" and "scrappy") - or so it seemed last Friday morning. Well what followed was almost farcical. I did some piecing, cut some background fabric, then cut some more, this time to the right size. Made 2 borders, pieced a bit more, cut some more background fabric, needed to cut some more to the correct size this time and realised I hadn't got enough. Rethought the background for the piecing, made up all four borders and sewed them on. (All of this piecing for the borders by the way involved bias edges, so I was trying to be very careful.) Stood back and looked, and realised I did not like the border! Aaaargh. This had taken me Friday, Saturday and Sunday afternoons to get to this point. I spent Sunday evening with a stitch ripper in hand, and then went back to non-arty, non-scrappy traditional borders, and this is the result.
Here, just to satisy your curiosity, is the top with the troublesome borders.
So now you see why my middle name is Stubborn.
I can see why you were so frustrated yesterday - can you use the seminole-type sections on the back or for something else (table runner :} )
ReplyDeleteLooking good now though, well done for persevering.
Hmmm, I can see why you didn't like the pieced borders, they kind of look like they're floating away. Maybe if you joined them in opposite corners (an L shape in the top right and bottom left - does that make sense?), they would frame the centre better. What do you mean you're not taking it apart again to try?? Huh, some people :o). Love the finished top and the fabrics, I'm looking forward to seeing it quilted.
ReplyDeleteMagnificent, congratulations of France
ReplyDeleteBest regards marylin
sorry they didn't work out-good idea-perhaps just the wrong top.
ReplyDeleteThe final version is terrific, I love the colors!
Sometimes we have to persevere and try, just to proove to ourselves that it's not right. I like both versions by the way. I'm glad you found an end result you are happy with. I'd probably have chucked it in a corner for 6 months!
ReplyDeleteYou know, after seeing the finished top, I will say that you made the right choice, looks fantastic. I love the design.
ReplyDeleteI like the final version, but I quite liked the first version too - - whichever way - that's fast work!!:0)
ReplyDeleteThe double brown with just a touch of teal, what a pretty combo, and hey no one will you will no what a little booger this quilt top was. Oh yes and of course everyone here in blog-land, but we wont tell.
ReplyDeleteI like both ways i guess it comes down to taste & what one likes or dislikes well done on both & even more so for unpicking it all
ReplyDeleteHugs Janice
....okay, so it's a not so well behaved middle, still a great quilt!
ReplyDeleteI'm a bit tired, but wanted to say how impressed I am with what you created. Great job. I think both borders would work, but I do like your 2nd one best. I'm going to have to give that border a try soon. Love it!
ReplyDeleteAs an FYI, I have a friend that does a border that always pops, very similar to your first border. But I suspect her version would have been to take a 1" strip of something in that blue tone in between the two strips of brown (vs the wider tan between the two browns). Something about the 1" strip in a border that realy seems to work so well in her quilts, yet easy.
